Invisalign and Age: Is There an Ideal Time for Clear Aligner Treatment
Do you want to straighten your teeth but would prefer not to wear braces? Invisalign® is an alternative to traditional braces. Instead of bulky metal or ceramic brackets and wires, Invisalign treatment uses a series of clear aligner trays that gently guide your teeth into proper alignment. Many patients often ask if there is an ideal age for clear aligner treatment.
Here are some tips from our Boston dentist, James M. Stein, to keep in mind as you explore orthodontic treatment.
Invisalign Candidacy
You may be a good candidate for clear aligner treatment with Invisalign if:
- You have crooked teeth, gapped teeth, overbite, underbite, or crossbite. Invisalign can address practically any orthodontic concern.
- Your issues are mild to moderate. Invisalign may not be the best treatment option for you if you have more severe issues.
- You can commit to wearing the clear aligners for 20-22 hours a day. If you or your child cannot wear the aligners for the prescribed time, it could slow or even stall your treatment. You must wear your aligner trays for the required time to give you the best possible chance of success.
- You are responsible enough to maintain and not lose the retainers. Losing a tray may require that we craft another which can also increase your treatment cost. It is also important to remember that this can stall your treatment while you wait for a new one to be crafted if you lose or damage one of the trays.
Is Invisalign Good for Young Children?
Because clear aligners are removable, it is typically not recommended for young children. Patients must be diligent with their treatment and be able to clean, wear, and not lose or break their aligner trays. Many young children are not responsible enough for this. However, children mature at different rates.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Stein at our Boston practice, you can discuss this and determine if clear aligners or braces are right for your child. It is important to remember that your dentist may suggest traditional braces to ensure the best possible outcome for your child.
What About Invisalign for Teenagers?
Invisalign is popular with teenagers because it is discreet and practically unnoticeable. However, like children, teens mature at different rates. If you believe your teen is responsible enough for clear aligner treatment, this may be a great option to straighten their smile!
Adult Invisalign: It’s Never Too Late to Straighten Your Smile
Some of our older patients think Invisalign is a treatment is something for younger people. This is not true. It is never too late to straighten your smile.
There are a multitude of benefits that orthodontic treatments like Invisalign provide. These benefits do not have an age limit. If you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment and can responsibly wear and maintain your clear aligners, you are not too old for treatment!
