A Closer Look at Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a porcelain restoration that encapsulates a damaged tooth. Shaped and colored like natural teeth, they restore the functionality and appearance of teeth that have been affected by decay, disease, or trauma. Your dentist will first address the underlying health problem concerning the tooth and then bond your custom crown over the outer layer of enamel.

Crowns Address Many Common Dental Issues

Badly Decayed or Damaged Teeth

If a large cavity, crack, or injury has significantly damaged your tooth, a crown can strengthen its structure.

Root Canal Infection

When you undergo treatment for a root canal infection, your dentist will typically cap the tooth with a crown for reinforcement.

Cosmetic Imperfections

Some large cosmetic flaws like cracks, worn enamel, and intrinsic discoloration, require the extensive coverage of a crown.

Missing or Extracted Teeth

If you have missing teeth due to severe decay or gum disease, a crown supported by a dental implant will replace the entire tooth structure.

Don't Delay Dental Treatment

If you are experiencing dental pain, swelling, or other symptoms of a problem, it is important to contact a dentist immediately. The sooner we see you, the more likely we can place a dental crown and save your natural tooth. Waiting can cause an infection to spread or the tooth to fall out on its own. Fortunately, our Boston practice provides emergency dental care to get you the help you need without delay.

Learn More About CEREC  Same-Day Crown Technology

Historically, getting a dental crown would require at least two office visits: the first to take an impression of the teeth and the second to place the crown. However, thanks to the revolutionary CEREC® technology, we complete both steps in just one appointment at our Boston practice.
The cutting-edge CEREC system allows dentists with the proper training to manufacture a custom crown within the office rather than outsource production to an office dental lab. The milling machine can complete your restoration in about an hour or less, a mere fraction of the time it would take the lab. This makes the procedure far more convenient and eliminates the need for temporary crowns, downtime, and follow-up visits. Furthermore, as we oversee every step of the process, we can ensure the finished product is up to our high-quality standards.

What To Expect During Treatment

You can avoid temporary crowns and multiple office visits with state-of-the-art same-day crown treatment.

Day of Procedure

You can avoid temporary crowns and multiple office visits with state-of-the-art same-day crown treatment.

Tooth Prep

Just like a dentist, our prosthodontist begins by addressing the cavity, infection, or other health problem that has compromised your tooth. This may require a root canal to extract bacteria from the tooth's inner chamber.  Then we reshape the outer layer of enamel to remove decayed portions of the tooth and create space for your crown.

Impressions

After the tooth has been reshaped, we will take CEREC digital impressions. Your dentist uses these 3D scans to design your crown to fit the precise dimensions of your tooth. Rather than send your impressions to a dental lab and fit you with a temporary crown, the designs go right to our in-house milling machine to begin production.

Milling

The CEREC machine carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic. Your dentist will carefully choose the shade of ceramic to match the color of your natural tooth enamel.

Restoration

Once production is complete (the process typically takes less than an hour), we will check the fit and make any necessary adjustments. Finally, we secure the crown to your tooth with special dental cement.  After it has been placed, the crown functions and looks just like a natural tooth and preserves the natural tooth structure underneath.

What About Implant-Supported Crowns?

It is important to understand that implant dentistry is much more complex than traditional dental crown treatment. When you replace a missing tooth with a dental implant, you will first undergo a surgical procedure at our Boston practice. Over the course of several months, the implant fuses with the jawbone and becomes a permanent part of your oral anatomy. Once you recover, we will attach a premium porcelain dental crown to your implant to complete your treatment.

The advantage of an implant-supported crown is that it replaces the entire missing tooth, including the root. Doing this promotes stimulation of the jaw, signaling it to grow bone and avoid the bone loss caused by a missing tooth.

Are There Any Benefits to Lab-Made Crowns?
Considering All Your Options

At the dental practice of Dr. James M. Stein, we believe that an informed patient is a happy patient. So we take every measure to ensure that our patients are well-educated about their treatment options. While CEREC crowns are undoubtedly the most convenient, there are also advantages to choosing a traditional lab-made crown.

If you are interested in a material other than ceramic, the lab can craft your crown from a wide range of alternatives including pure porcelain and porcelain fused to metal. Since they are made by hand, the aesthetics tend to be slightly more realistic, and a good option for highly visible front teeth.

Of course, what is best for one patient is not necessarily the same for the next. Our job is to answer your questions and help you select the best treatment plan for your needs.
