Your Professional Cleaning and Exam A Step-By-Step Look

Digital impressions, 3-D X-rays, and other kinds of advanced tools allow us to provide the most effective care.
Digital impressions, 3-D X-rays, and other kinds of advanced tools allow us to provide the most effective care.

Take X-Rays

During your dental cleaning, your hygienist will first perform X-rays for Dr. Stein to review.

Plaque and Tartar Removal

After your X-rays, we will use a scaler to effectively remove bacteria buildup from tooth surfaces and your gum line. We will pay particular attention to areas you aren't able to access easily on your own.

Polish the Teeth

Once the plaque and tartar have been removed, we can polish your teeth with professional-strength toothpaste to minimize any minor dental staining and smooth the surface of your teeth. This process makes it more difficult for bacteria to accumulate in the future.

Check for Tooth Decay and Gum Disease

After your cleaning, Dr. Stein will use state-of-the-art technology to thoroughly examine your teeth and gums for tooth decay and periodontal disease. For any cavities, he can repair your tooth with a tooth-colored filling. If any signs of gum disease are detected, he may recommend a deep cleaning, otherwise known as scaling and root planing treatment.

Oral Cancer Screening

Checking for signs of oral cancer is an important part of each exam. Dr. Stein will visually examine your mouth, lips, cheeks, head, and neck for any inflammation and abnormalities. If you use alcohol or tobacco products, are frequently exposed to the sun, or have oral cancer in your family history, he may recommend a special staining test to check for any lesions in the soft tissue of your mouth.

How Often Should You Get Dental Cleanings?

If you’re looking for a straightforward way to keep your smile bright and your breath fresh while supporting the overall health of your body, cleanings are a crucial — but all too often overlooked — way to accomplish this.

We generally recommend patients in Boston, MA, visit our dental office for teeth cleaning every six months. However, if you’re at risk for or have had gum disease, three to four dental visits a year may better help you maintain your dental health. Once your dentist learns more about you and the state of your teeth and gums, they will be able to make a more informed recommendation on how often you should get dental cleanings.

Maintaining a Healthy Smile After Your Dental Cleaning

Brush Your Teeth Twice Daily

Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride in it at least twice a day to effectively remove bacteria and keep plaque buildup at bay.

Floss at Least Once Daily

Flossing removes stubborn food particles that become stuck between your teeth and plaque from below the gumline that can erode tooth enamel and turn into tartar.

Brush Your Tongue

Brushing and flossing your teeth eliminates cavity-causing bacteria, but brushing your tongue as well lets you reap the full benefits of a strong oral hygiene routine.

Stick to a Healthy Diet

To enjoy the benefits of your dental cleaning for as long as possible, limit sugary and starchy foods and rinse with an approved antibacterial mouthwash daily.
